"Vibe coding" is everywhere right now: you describe to an AI what you want, and it writes the code. That works surprisingly well – until it does not. So what does it mean for the web designer's job?
What is really changing
- routine work gets faster: forms, tests, changes across many files
- research gets easier: unfamiliar APIs, error messages, documentation
- simple websites are built in hours instead of days
Where the limits are
Once real customer data, integrations and security are involved, playing around and craftsmanship part ways. AI writes code fast – but it is not liable for it, and it knows neither your workflows nor your customers.
What remains of the craft
The architecture, the data model, security and the question of whether something should be built at all. That is why I read what it produces, test it automatically and understand every line before it goes live.
My conclusion
For me, AI is a tool like a good cordless drill: it saves an enormous amount of time, but you have to know where the screw goes. The web designer's job is not getting smaller – it is shifting from typing to thinking.
