What is a PIM? Why small shops do not need €50,000 software

Published

What is a PIM?

A PIM (product information management) is the central place for all product data: prices, variants, sizes, texts, images and supplier data. Shop and ERP get their data from there – instead of from five Excel lists that contradict each other.

Why small shops do not need €50,000 software

Big PIM systems can do everything – and cost accordingly: implementation projects, per-user licences, consultants. For a shop with a few thousand products, that is usually too much. A lean, tailor-made PIM covers exactly your workflows:

  • your supplier lists, whatever the format
  • your pricing rules and margins
  • your shop and your ERP

An example from practice

When a shop sells lead screws in any length, one route seems obvious: create every length as a separate variant. At junaspin that would have meant almost 30,000 rigid variants. Today customers order to the millimetre, and in the background the PIM matches the stock lengths in the ERP with the dynamic shop products. Maintenance is a fixed cycle: import, decide, publish.

My advice

With large product ranges, start with the data. A beautiful design cannot save bad data – but good data makes every design better.
